What our clients are saying
I was injured at work when I fell in the parking lot during a snow storm. This area I fell in has been known for multiple falls by personal. I unfortunaly was one who ended up with an injury.
I fractured my tibia plateau in my knee during the fall. I elected to do my rehabilitation with Traci, our onsite athletic trainer, because…she knows and understands what the job consist of, the therapy can be done at my worksite so I don’t need to travel to a clinic. I like the fact she was able to communicate with my doctor and coordinate my care.
I believe I healed faster because of Traci being onsite at the work place and was able to return to work faster. I was very happy to have Traci and this program during this time of need and it caused me to become more active in my rehab.
-Marlin M, Professional Firefighter/Paramedic
I wanted to take the time to thank the people who made the decision to use the services of Advanced PT. As a firefighter/paramedic, my livelihood depends largely on the physical ability to do hard work, day in and day out, sometimes ALL day and night. After overa decade of doing this kind of work, and loving it, I began to wonder if this would be a sustainable career. In some ways, professional firefighting can be likened to certain professional sports. Each are great, action packed careers, and each take a devastating toll on the body. Between the demands of the job as we all some special family circumstances regarding our children, the last seven years have resulted in significant pain in my lower back, my upper back, my arms and my shoulders. Each of these culminated in the winter of 2017-18.
In January of 2018 at the recommendation of Fire Chief Kujawa, the City of Wausau made the decision to hire the services of Licensed Athletic Trainer, Traci Tauferner. Twice a week Traci or another specialist from Advanced PT comes to the Fire Department to offer insight, customized exercise programs, and physical therapy to anyone who might have questions, fitness goals and, like me, pain.
What I appreciated most about the interaction I first had with Traci was that she didn’t simply address the pain that I was experiencing by giving me exercises and customized workout program. While that was great, she also asked what I now consider a very critical question, “What are your long-term physical fitness goals?” I hadn’t made an appointment to discuss anything long term, but it led to a discussion about my hobbies. I explained that the one thing I love to do more than anything else is is hiking, camping, bowhunting in the mountains, which can be extremely physically demanding. I explained that I enjoyed preparing for those trips by taking our daughters for hikes up Rib Mountain, and bike rides around arou neighborhood. I told her I enjoy fishing, and that I can’t wait to take my girls fishing for the first time. And I told her that given the problems I was experiencing, all of these past-times were being threatened.
After doing an initial fitness assessment, Traci encouraged me, saying she could help. She showed me specific exercises for each of my aches and pains. She wrote customized workout plans to strengthen the areas that had been neglected by my ignorance for many years. She scheduled routine checkups to monitor progress and tweak workout rgimens. And it worked!
I recently returned from bowhunting elk in the Rocky Mountains. This was the 14th year I’ve been blessed to do it, and I can honestly say it was the best year I’ve had to date. My shoulders, arms and back were all pain-free for the first time, and my cardio conditioning was the best it’s ever been. I’m still far from being a mountain man, or even a good elk hunter for that matter, but Lord-willing, I look forward to more similar adventures.
I’m so incredibly thankful for my job, the people I work with and for, and the services offered by Advanced Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine. Thank you very much for investing in your firefighters. Your support and effort to maintain our health and career longevity is very much appreciated.

Many thanks to Advanced Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine for making a difference in my life! You helped fix a nagging and somewhat debilitating problem from an outstanding work injury that otherwise was headed toward expensive treatment (an MRI, PT, and possibly surgery, according to the doctor). You also helped me with smaller injuries related to my demanding work and active lifestyle. The fitness assessment and customized workout programs, coupled with monitoring and encouragement, have made me stronger and more capable both at work and at home. I am grateful for the improved health and increased fitness afforded time through the services and resources you and Advanced provide.
A simple thought- you are insufficient to express my appreciation for helping improve my health and fitness. I want to share some highlights of my journey so you can better understand my gratitude. Additionally, the details will allow me to thank both my supervisor and employer for contracting with Advanced Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine.
In 2002, I had a rear dislocation of my shoulder after a head-first fall. I damaged the head of the humerus when it struck my scapula and tore off much of the labrum and part of the long-head bicep tendon…Last year, my shoulder was giving me sufficient difficulty that I was considering seeking treatment; however, I decided to wait and see if utilization of this new program would provide relief. It did and more! Traci identified the problem, which was secondary to the underlying injury and my imperfect rehab techniques, and put me on a new path to improvement. After correcting the issue, you helped me strengthen my shoulder and supporting body systems. My shoulder is both stronger and more functional than it has been since the original injury. I am convinced that this saved my employer the cost of an MRI, injections, and surgery.
In 2006, I broke my vertebrae at work, which resulted in L4-L5, L5-S1 symptoms. Most have resolved with a specific exercise regimen I’ve continued since rehab. However, I do get occasional neuropathy issues in my legs. You helped me minimize them by providing customized exercises to strengthen my core related to the structures involved.
In 2018, over the course of our contract with Advanced, I have had smaller issues like shin splits and strain muscles that were quickly addressed before becoming problematic. As you can see, I have significantly benefited from this program.
As a manager, I have seen many of our employees increase health and fitness as it relates directly to what we do. They express that it also helps their quality of life away from work. I have also seen employees receive rehabilitation at work for on-the-job injuries, which is both more convenient and less expensive. The convenience seems to improve rehab compliance. Advanced Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine’s services have definitely saved us money and provided invaluable resources access.
This program will save money by preventing or minimizing injuries over time, in addition to the direct savings already occurring.
